What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a unique form of body work, one just needs to experience it to be able to understand its uniqueness.
It is a very safe, non-invasive manual therapy that uses stretches, joint mobilisations and acupressure techniques to promote physical and emotional wellbeing and regain health by working with the body’s own resources.
Some have described it as acupuncture without the needles as we use the same channels and points to deeply connect with the energy of the body.
Others have called it the Japanese Physiotherapy as historically Shiatsu has been used for martial arts and sports injuries quite effectively. In fact, it was used by the Olympic Japanese National team to  prevent and manage injuries of its members.
Shiatsu is a profoundly relaxing experience that has been proven beneficial for treating many different conditions of the body, mind and spirit.
The form of Shiatsu I practice is called Zen Shiatsu which was developed by Shizuto Masunaga in the last century and puts a very strong emphasis on the practitioners self development work to increase their sensitivity to the Qi, our life force, in the body.

What to expect from a Shiatsu Session?

The treatment is traditionally performed fully dressed in comfortable, loose and light clothes (preferably cotton) on a futon on the floor without the use of any oils, creams or herbs. Alternatively, if there is mobility restrictions it can be performed on a massage table or an ergonomic chair.
The session normally lasts about an hour. The first appointment will take a bit of extra time to include the consultation needed to build your health history and get to know you a bit better in order to assess what your specific needs are.
Above all a Shiatsu session is a time for yourself where you can safely relax, connect, allow healing to take place and enjoy.
